History:
Pan’s Labyrinth is a fairy tale story that takes place around the hardships of the post civil war Spain era. It’s a story about a young girl named Ofelia who has to travel with her pregnant mother to a military outpost in rural Spain. There she meets her new Stepfather, the Captain Vidal who still holds his war fort from the local guerrilla groups in the region.
While in this terrible, war torn place, Ofelia discovers a fairy, which leads her to a very old labyrinth. There she meets a faun who tells her of her past and her real tale. Once long ago Princess Moanna of the Underworld was so curious about the Overworld that she ran away from her pain free world of immortality to take a look at the world above. When she left the sun was so bright that it blinded her and she lost her memories. Cursed to wander the above world, blind and hurting, the Princess soon died, unable to find her way home or even remember about it. The King of the Underworld, her father, was sad, but knew that she would find her way home. He had portals constructed around the world, knowing that some day his daughter's soul would return to them. That was what this place was. A portal within a labyrinth, made to help guide his daughter's soul home.
At first Ofelia didn’t believe it, though she was not scared of the Faun before her, telling her such a tale. He remarked that the Princess would have a birthmark on her shoulder, like a moon and star. When checking her shoulder later, she finds just this. The Faun gave her a book, to help her guide her through three trials in order to assure that the Princess had not truly become mortal. If that was so she could never come home, and all those of the Underworld would be forgotten once and forall. If she can pass the trials that challenge her physical and mental abilities as well as demonstrate her self-confidence and decision making skills, then she can go home. Leave this world of pain and suffering and be happy again.
Ofelia has had a rough life, being born in the middle of a long war, having to deal with her pregnant mother who remarried a cruel and heartless military leader who she has to call ‘father’ even if she is very firm on the fact that he is NOT her father. She had to change location from city to wilds and there is fighting going on all the time. To be able to follow this fairy tale dream would be the best thing in her life.
In the three days given to her by the faun, she slowly passes the first trial, just as her mother falls more so ill because of the baby. She nearly fails the second trail, breaking a rule after passing it. The Faun is upset and abandons her to this life, upsetting her deeply. In that time her mother is ill and goes into premature labor. The birth of her brother happens, but her mother dies doing so. This is the hardest time of her life, losing her chance of freedom, her mother, and being stuck with this evil ‘father’ forever. She’s fearful of her life but sticks it out, because what else can she do?
The Faun returns though, offering her one more chance. All she has to do is bring her baby brother with her to the labyrinth tonight, and she can descend home once again. She’s scared because the room is locked, and her stepfather is very angry. The faun gives her a way to get in, and tells her to hurry. She does as much, sneaking in to get her brother. SHe drugs her stepfather so he will become groggy and hopefully sleep, but as she makes her escape with her brother, he follows, stumbling along after her.
Ofelia flees to the Labyrinth with her brother, scared and being chased by a madman with a gun. WHen she gets there to the center, the Faun tells her to give him the child. That innocent blood has to be spilled in order to open the portal. Ofelia refuses, protecting her baby brother, the child that killed her most beautiful mother. Because of her refusal, the Faun says that there is nothing more he can do for her, and she will be mortal until her very end. He leaves.
The Captain finds the girl and his son, scared and upset, left alone in the middle of the Labyrinth. He takes his son from her arms and shoots her in the belly, leaving her there to bleed out. As he walks off with his son, he is captured by the local rebels, and the child is taken away. The rebels go to look for her, but find Ofelia too late. Already lying on the ground, near the edge of the portal, bleeding out.
Drops of blood fall and innocent blood is spilled on the portal. Ofelia, waking up to foggy memories, finds herself in the Underworld Court, her father and mother sitting on thrones, waiting for her. Her name is Princess Moanna, and she remembers the warmth and beauty of her family and her court. There she would remain, never again curious of the Overworld. Her people loved her and she them.
The child in the above died, tragically in the end. Some might say that the real story was her death and ending there. Others might say that her tale was real, and she did return home to the Underworld, to live out her days happy and out of pain. This is where her story changes though. Just after meeting with her parents and the Faun again, as she goes to sit with her patient father, the floor turns from under her and she wakes up elsewhere, unsure of what has gone on. She holds some memories of Moanna, and all of Ofelia’s memories, but she was not fully restored, and so everything feels a bit out of line and dream like.
Personality:
Ofelia, or Princess Moanna, is a shy and sheltered young girl who grew up in the middle of the Spanish war. She’s a bit of a lonely child, finding comfort in books, fables, stories and fairy tales. She loves fantasy and mystery and interesting colorful things. Her world is so dark and gray otherwise. She was raised an only child but she was not raised selfish and looks forward to sharing her world with her baby brother. Only her world isn’t her reality and everything gets a little tilted as she meets a fairy.
She does believe in fairies. She believes in what they look like or how they should act, even to the point that when she meets a very large bug, she informed it that fairies look like ‘this’ and shows it a picture of a humanoid fairy, which the bug takes the shape of. She isn’t at all scared of the little fairy. And even later, when she meets the startling Faun, she isn’t as scared as she could be. She is cautious however. This shows that strange and new things might startle or frighten her, but she doesn’t scream or run from them. She carefully investigates things with curious intent before making up her mind. While in the chamber with the Pale Baby Eater she faced him with a curious mind, but as he came to life she fled, fearful that he would eat her too. Just like he had ate the fairies that were helping her.
Moanna has a good sense of mortality with all her time as being Ofelia. She understands pain and suffering, even though she did not before she went to the Overworld. Because of her time as Ofelia, the girl is careful. She’s cautious but kind, not shunning away hard tasks because they are hard, but thinking about them and going through them with care. She thinks before she acts, for the most part.
She has been lead by her stomach before though. Her task with the Baby Eater, she was forbid to eat any of the food at it’s table. Once she retrieved the knife (choosing not the door the fairies picked, but the one she felt was the proper door, showing her freedom to choose and instincts) she was free to leave, but instead was tempted by the food on the table. She took some grapes, because she had been sent to bed with no food that night. The Baby Eater came to life and fed on her friends, chasing after her. She nearly did not escape. It was this event that made her almost lose everything. Because of this she now understands how her actions might cause her trouble and suffering. How following the rules or guidelines are important.
When around others she is not so very talkative. She’s not used to being around others. One might call her shy, and she is, a bit, but mostly she was raised to be seen and not heard. That and most grown ups tend to overlook her anyhow. She’s never really had friends nor been around others her age, so she wouldn’t know how to react to a friendly person wanting to be her friend. There was a older woman who worked for the Captain though, who befriended Ofelia in an almost motherly way. Ofelia wanted no harm to be done to her and would hug her when she was allowed. She takes well to motherly figures. A motherly figure wanting to look over her, hold her or tell her it’s all right is fine. A father figure on the other hand she has strong feelings against. She had a fantastic father in the Overworld, and her father in the Underworld is still strongly influencing her.
Motivations of this character are simple. She just wants to be happy. She want to protect those who are smaller and innocent. She wants to go home. With her memories of being Princess Moanna partly coming in as well, she will also be motivated to help serve and protect the fairy kind. Strange and unusual things won't bother her too badly. Ghosts will interest her. Creatures will gather her curiosity. Bugs are friends. Which in this place could be a problem in some forms.
In short she’s a kind but shy girl who is curious about the world and willing to protect those who cannot protect themselves, even if she is just a young thing herself.
Fears:
Ofelia has a lot of normal little girl fears. As Moanna is remembered now as well, those fears are slightly less, as her kingdom does not feel pain and suffering, but because she has been through it, she does know. She understands pain and fear. Ofelia’s fears are still her own.
Little girl fears, like unknown dark places and creepy shadows, unknown bugs crawling on her or around her. Creatures that hide in the night. Strange sounds. All these things she can be fearful of, but she’s also a very brave girl, and most of the time pushes past them. Like when she had to crawl into the fig tree to face a huge toad to get a key. She had to go into a dark muddy place alone, full of bugs. At first they scared her, but then she was alright with them, allowing them to crawl on her. It’s these small fears that she tends to face and push past. However, bring these things into larger numbers, or make it something out of her control, and she’ll be much more scared. Ten or so bugs crawling around her as she moves? Not so bad. Hundreds of bugs crawling all over her and being unable to move? Much more fearful.
Being trapped in a place with no way out is a fear. Every time she has been trapped somewhere she has had the power to get out some how. To be trapped and unable to get out would bother her greatly. The smaller the space the more fearful.
Watching the innocent get hurt, or be unable to do anything to help those smaller than her would also be triggering. As a Princess, she hasn’t had to do much for herself, but to see those of her people or those smaller then her harmed is upsetting.
Weaknesses:
She’s a child of 12. Princess of the Underworld or not, she’s still a child. She’s not strong like a full grown person, or as nimble as she could be, but she can run, and she can squeeze into tight spaces with ease. She isn’t a delicate daisy but she’s not stone either. Much like a child she is physically immature, even as a Princess of the Underworld. She was granted no special abilities, other than the inability to die while home. In this place it might be different. She might actually feel pain and suffering again, but she will be used to it, as she’d lived all of Ofelia’s life that way.
She’s not the best socially, as she’s not sure how to be around people too well. She was raised with a loving mother, but things turned to a ‘seen and not heard’ relationship with her stepfather. When around others she tends to be shy and silent, speaking mostly when spoken to. And even when she doesn’t have to follow that rule, she really doesn’t talk much.
There is the smallest tendency to be self sacrificing now. When others are in pain or in need, she will do what she can to help them, even if it causes herself pain and trouble. When her mother is sick, she does what she can to help her, even placing a mandrake root in milk and dropping her own blood into the dish in order to help. This later brought her trouble because of the Captain, but she would have done it again. Argued against her mother again, if it had kept helping her.
She has no survival training, no medical training and very little education, though she does know how to read and loves books. She was schooled just enough by her mother to be socially acceptable, she was not trained to defend herself against anything, to fight or to live out in the world alone. She can’t swim, and was never taught to do so.
Mundane Strengths/Abilities:
She loves to read and is very good at reading, Spanish. She speaks only Spanish (though with the house I believe it translates? I have to double check that). She might not be great with other studies above her age bracket, but she’s very good at reading. She likes to draw and isn’t too bad at that either. She has a very deep curiosity which leads her to trying new things, and she is a fast learner because of this. She picks up on things easy.
She’s small and bendy, flexible, able to get in and through small spaces and out again, though she’s not fond of them.
Sensitivity/Magical Ability:
Moanna has the ability to speak with the otherworldly kind of things. Ghosts, goblins, fairy folk and other supernatural things she can see, interact with and talk to. Being the Princess of the Underworld, things like that and other supernatural underworld beings come natural to her to see and speak to. As the Princess of the Underworld she understands other languages than her own, but mostly those spoken in the Underworld or the lost languages of old.
In this place she should be able to see, talk and interact with ghosts, unless mods state otherwise.
Supply List:
She has so very little on her when she arrives. When she appeared before her parents and the Underworld court, she was in a yellow gold dress, with a deep red coat over top of it, and dark red shoes with bright red laces. She appears to hold nothing else with her, so she will come with just that, a red under dress, full body, underwear, yellow gold dress, red over coat, red shoes and socks.

This was not where she was a moment ago. Was it another test? Did she not do enough to be welcomed back home? Mama said she could sit beside her father, that he had been waiting patiently all this time for her. Papa smiled down upon her as did the court. Where were they all now?
Seated in a stark and mysterious bed, she looked around the dorm room, unsure to why she was here, but it looked a bit like the world she had been in before, and not at all the warm world she was from. Part of her memories had started to come back as she woke up in the court of the Underworld. All pain and suffering washed away from her body and a soft happy warmth washed over her.
Now it was gone again.
Once again she felt aches in her body and a coldness to her skin. Her hands rubbed over her arms a moment, moving to put her feet to the ground. What has happened? She was no longer in her golden and red dress, and her feet were bare, save for socks. The clothing she found herself in was not her own, in either place. Double skirts and a apron, with her hair covered and everything. Her hands wandered, confused at first to how or when she changed.
“Papa?” She called out on a soft voice, curious. What was she suppose to do for this test? Was it a test? Was the Faun around to help? Where were the fairies?
A thumping in the chest at the end of this strange little bed got her attention at that thought. Slipping from her bed she moved to the trunk, eyeing it uncomfortably. Her name was on a little plate on it. Carefully, her finger traced over the little engraving. ‘Moanna’. She smiled at it, until something inside thumped again, making her draw back her hand swiftly, as if scared she’d burn it.
Things that thumped on doors like this aren’t always good things. Then again it could be helpful. Maybe it was trapped. Maybe it was the fairy! With little else thought given to the dangers that lurked inside, she moved to open it, lifting the lid to jump back in surprise as a stuffed frog popped up before her. It jumped, right out of the trunk, and made a sound at her. “Fairy?” She asked, but the stuffed frog just jumped again, moving farther, looking back at her, as if it wanted her to follow.
She gave it a nod, moving to close the trunk, only to pause. Her red shoes. So it had been real. She grabbed them, pulling them onto her feet and lacing the bright red laces quickly. “Hold on, hold on…” She told the frog as it croaked at her again. As soon as the second one was tied, she closed the lid of the trunk, got up and chased after the frog, letting it lead her wherever she needed to go. It must be the fairy, in a different form.
